Braai Baas electric grid brush cleaning a stainless steel braai grid

What to check before you buy

Four things separate a proper stainless steel braai grid from a shiny disappointment.

Grade: insist on 304

304 (18/8) stainless is the most rust-resistant grade you will find at a sensible price. If the listing does not state the grade, assume 201 and walk away.

Bar thickness & spacing

4–6 mm bars spaced 8–12 mm apart hold heat, leave proper braai marks and stop wors and sosaties from sagging through.

Fit your braai, not the shelf

Measure the inside of your braai across and front-to-back before buying. Hinged grids suit chops and wors; flat grids suit big cuts and roll cages.

Frame, handles and hinges

Welded frames beat crimped ones. Look for cool-touch or long handles and a hinge that clips shut with one hand while wearing braai gloves.

304 vs 430 vs 201 stainless

All three are sold as “stainless steel”. Only one of them shrugs off coastal air and coal heat.

GradeRust resistanceHeat behaviourVerdict
304 (18/8)Excellent, safe near the coastHolds shape, discolours to a gold patinaBuy this one
430Decent inland, spots at the seaFine, slightly more warpingAcceptable budget pick
201Poor — pits and rusts fastWarps and scalesAvoid

Quick test: 304 is non-magnetic, 430 and 201 stick to a fridge magnet. It is not perfect, but it catches most mislabelled grids.

Getting the size right

  • Measure the inside width and depth of your braai, then subtract 20 mm so the grid drops in without jamming.
  • Check the height of your grid rails — a hinged grid adds 20–30 mm of thickness when closed.
  • For a kettle braai, measure the diameter across the rim, not the lid.
  • Wors and small cuts need 8–12 mm bar spacing; anything wider needs a basket or roll cage.
  • Buying two grids (one flat, one hinged) beats one compromise grid if you braai every week.

How to keep a stainless grid looking new

Burn the grid hot for five minutes, let it drop to warm, then power through the carbonised fat with a cordless electric grid brush. No soaking, no wire-brush scratches, no bristles in your chops.

Stainless steel braai grid FAQs

Which stainless steel grade is best for a braai grid?
304 stainless steel is the sweet spot for South African braais: it resists rust, handles coal heat and is food-safe. 430 is cheaper and magnetic but stains sooner near the coast. 201 looks the same in the shop and pits within a season.
How thick should the bars be?
Look for 4–6 mm solid rod or 1.2 mm+ tube. Thin 2–3 mm wire grids warp over hot coals, which makes turning meat and cleaning a fight.
Do stainless steel grids need seasoning?
No. Unlike cast iron, stainless does not need an oil layer for rust protection. A light oil before cooking just helps with sticking.
What is the fastest way to clean a stainless steel braai grid?
Burn the grid hot for five minutes to carbonise the fat, then run a cordless electric grid brush over the warm bars. Stainless takes brass or stainless bristles without damage, so a powered brush does in seconds what a hand brush takes ten minutes to do.
Can I put a stainless steel grid in the dishwasher?
You can, but burnt-on fat rarely shifts and large grids do not fit. Brushing the grid while it is still warm is faster and gentler on the finish.

Got the grid? Now keep it clean.

The Braai Baas Cordless Electric Grid Brush strips burnt fat off stainless steel in seconds — delivered in 10–20 business days with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
